Making Your House A Home!

Whether you are buying a new house together or moving in with your partner, some changes will need to be made. Moving in together may seem scary at first, but the only way to make it easy is by making the house feel like a home, since a house is just a house until it’s filled with people you love. A home is a place where you feel you belong, a place where you feel safe and loved and most importantly, a place where that is a perfect blend of both your personalities. Hence, it is important to talk about likes and dislikes about what you want in the house and other things.

Some vital points to discuss are as follows:

  • Decide on whether you want to make your differences/similarities stand out or not.
  • Choose a colour scheme for the entire house.
  • Work around a budget.
  • What are the things you want to keep and what are the things you need to get rid of.

If there are too many differences, you will agree on some things, in order to create
harmony that can make both of you happy. If there are a lot of similarities,
then things will be easier for you, since you already have a lot in common, so
creating an ambiance that you both enjoy is fairly easier.

Making Your Choices

For the walls, choose colours that are neutral but in tones that both of you love along with birch wood for furniture or any of the six main wood colours – natural, medium, cherry, walnut, mahogany and black.

But if you want a more classic look with a modern approach, use Wenge or champagne oak, singly or combined as colours for the furniture and tones of off-white, sand or faded gray on the walls.Sometimes we hang onto things that don’t serve any purpose anymore. But it’s always a good idea to let old things go and make room for new things that you can acquire together. Try a few fun DIY projects together, or buy decorating items that go well with your personality, but don’t overdo it. No one likes overcrowded shelves.

  • If you don’t have a spacious place, or are on a budget, try to focus on the bedroom and the living room, since these are the two rooms that you will spend most of your free time together. But if you have a couple of rooms to spare, try to dedicate two of them to your hobbies.
  • If one of you is interested in painting and the other prefers to play pool or table tennis from time to time, turn one room into a painting workshop and the other into a games room.
  • Or you can turn a room into an easily convertible movie-room that both of you can enjoy, just buy a screen projector and a projector which you can connect to your laptop, a few couches or a large sofa and you are set. Make sure you paint the walls of
the movie-room in really dark colours like dark burgundy to get that theater feel.
  • Another thing you could do is paint the walls and ceiling of this room dark blue and put up tiny lights around the walls and ceiling making it look like the night sky.

Points To Remember

  • Communicate – Tell each other what you like and what you do not like, so that your partner understands what you want.
  • Understand – Understand why your partner may like something and don’t decline an idea from the beginning.
  • Accept/Be Open Minded- Be open to opinions and ideas. Listen to each other’s ideas and try to look at each one’s point of view.
  • Compromise – You may not agree with everything your partner says, but compromising sometimes is a good thing. Accept one thing in return for another.
