Best way to Oman from Dubai in February?

We are visiting family in Dubai in mid-February for a week and want to make a detour to Oman as we hear good things about it.

Bearing in mind we will only have 2-3 days in Oman, what would you suggest we do travel-wise in order to get there? What's the most effectove use of time - fly from Dubai (who with? any recommendations gratefully received) or drive in a rental car?

If the latter, are we likely to run into lots of red-tape heavy border crossings, and do we need visas? Can they be arranged in advance or do you pay on the spot? We are British and Swedish passport holders.

And lastly, what are must-sees or particular recommendations for things to see and do on this short, first time visit to Oman?

Any insights gratefully received.
