“Self-love is a shortcut to spirituality" I read in a self-help book. But in a world which is constantly surrounded by the so called high-called selfie cameras canoodling on selfie sticks bolstered by a pervasive social media, the compare and despair effect and the FOMO is inevitable.
So, the question of self-acceptance never arises.
Humans essentially being a social animal always wants to fit in, no one likes being left out.
Most of the time as socially inept as we are, we go out of our way to prove who we really are and what's our worth.
Adding fuel to the fire a man with a receding hairline has more insecurities and endures a trauma both psychologically and socially seeking validation.
But why do we need society's approval anyway??
What exactly are we chasing here??
Those are some of the impending but important questions which the latest film "BALA" attempts to pose.

It's a story of an average guy from Kanpur named Balamukund "BALA" Shukla (Quite ironic) played by "Ayushmann Khurrana" who is simply proud of his genetically inherited qualities and completely oblivious to the fragile nature of his genes(typical urban Indian youth) suffers from premature balding and his subsequent efforts to battle and deal with this truth.

When people's insecurities act as the basis for the tabloid industry to function well, it's very comforting to see a film whose premise is about premature balding, especially from an industry who did a great job in promoting that insecurity for the past 75 years.

Film's two female characters Latika (Bhumi padnekar) and pari (Yami Gautam) represents two polarities of the millenials. Pari represents a typical Tik Tok influenced generation who believes one's look is the most important aspect in one's life. We come to know through some of the dialogues that this core beliefs were planted by her mom from an early age, and to her defense she is getting her success only through her looks, so her opinions are well justified, but the only thing which she doesn't realize is that she is just a victim of this society’s theatrically imposed standard of beauty which is nothing more than a myth.
On the other hand, we got Latika who once had a crush on our hero "Bala" and who has been constantly and rigorously bullied for her skin color right from her childhood, at times openly, most times subtly. Heartbreakingly though even our hero joins the list. She is a victim of different type of violence that prevails in our society, violence of insensitivity.

But she did not allow any of these bullying to influence her. Infact that made her so wise and she goes on to become a successful lawyer!! She represents those genuine millenial intellectual population who see things beyond just looks.

Film maker "Amar Kaushik" seemed particular in not making this film to be a preachy one, and to his credit he is fairly succeeds in it.
He weaved this plot in such a delicate and balanced way which made the message reach efficiently.

Most important asset of the film (also to the Bollywood industry now) is our lead " Ayushmann Khurrana". One cannot talk about the film without praising him, he constantly proves through his choice of scripts that he is in a different league and surpasses his contemporaries in many aspects. With this film he has officially become the Golden Boy of Hindi cinema.

Overall this film is an important film for this generation who thinks genetically inherited qualities as their virtue, who were constantly being bombarded by these fashion divas tantrums to look perfect. And these insecurities have been very carefully seeded from their childhood through various faculties of mass media. But perfection is a myth. If you feel you are complete within yourself then the outer world will simply bow down to it.
So, in short Self-love is a shortcut to union"
That's a core of this film and yes, this film achieves success in conveying that.
